I trained at Bournemouth Municipal College of Art.
Went into advertising as a graphic designer, and started exhibiting work with the Bournemouth Gallery, Gervis Place, and the Peter Hedley Gallery in Wareham.
I studied egg tempera painting with Nicholas St John Rosse, a student of Pietro Annigoni. From that time most of my output was in that medium. All of my work sold and shown in RA Summer Exhibition shows were in tempera.
In the early 80s I began to show in the London galleries WH Patterson of Cork St, Anna Mei Chadwick of Parson's Green and the RBA, RSMA, SWLA and Singer-Friedlander exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, as well as the RA Summer Exhibitions.
Teaching: Poole & Bournemouth Adult Education: 'A' level art, watercolour, oil and pastel, and portrait, life drawing/painting, still life and landscape, I also began tutoring residential courses, both in the UK and abroad.
In 1992 I began writing for the art magazine Leisure Painter and I still do. This led on to the publication of my first practical art book 'How to Mix and Use Colour' in 2003. This book sold more than 30,000 copies and was reprinted in paperback and translated into 3 languages. This led me into producing three more practical art books, all of which did well.
My work is in the collections of the Duchy of Cornwall, The Chartered Institute of Insurers, Bournemouth Corporation and Lord Asa Briggs, and in private collections worldwide.
I have greatly reduced the amount of teaching I was doing and have recently moved house, converted a derelict workshop into a 365/24/7 north light studio and am concentrating on developing my own work.
I am looking forward to contributing in Dorset Artsweek in 2016, to showing more in London and tutoring some day masterclasses in portraiture near Dorchester.
