I am a self taught artist working in oils, I have been interested in art from as early as I can remember but really only kick started my painting in September 2009 during convalescence from a radical prostatectomy.
As well as brushes I use knives and rollers as tools in my work.
Graduating with an MA honours in Fine Art from Edinburgh University and College of Art in 1977, I have been involved in making art in various ways ever since. I have exhibited in London, Aldeburgh, Cumbria, Somerset and Dorset. In the early eighties I was proprietor of an Arts and Crafts Gallery in Coniston, Cumbria, showing my own work and that of other British artists and craftsmen. I have sailed the Atlantic and worked as a charter skipper in the Caribbean, painting to commission for guests a...
I am an enthusiastic amateur botanical artist. I have been painting in watercolour for about 12 years. I am motivated by the seemingly endless variations of colour, form, texture, movement, scent and sound you experience with plants. I enjoy trying to capture something of these qualities and represent them in my drawings and paintings.
I care about accuracy, control of my watercolours and about producing aesthetically satisfying paintings. I take inspiration from flowers, fruits and vegetables...
Sue has a life long love of art and photography. From dabbling with watercolours at an early age she ventured wholeheartedly into photography, taking a series of City & Guilds courses at Yeovil College which culminated in being awarded a Licentiate from the Royal Photographic Society.
Photography took the centre stage for many years, partly as it was easier to access than painting, due to time restraints imposed by work and family life. Sue worked as an art technician in a secondary school f...
I retrained as a stone carver, letter cutter and architectural mason in 1999 and have been self-employed ever since, making headstones and memorials, lettering panels, relief carvings and small sculptures.
I love working on deep relief carvings, such as my 'St Michael', installed on the west front of Stinsford Church.
I also relish renovation work, such as the pinnacles on Strangways Hall in Abbotsbury, which are exact copies of original Victorian stonework.
I have lived in Dorset most of my life, but have travelled widely, Canada,India,Italy, france to name but a few. I studied fine art at college as a mature student, and have attended several workshops to broaden my art experience.
I work mostly in oils, painting landscapes, seascapes and semi-realistic abstracts, using colour to create emotional reaction from the viewer.
Dorset has been very inspirational, as the landscapes and coastal views are the best you can find anywhere.
I like to experim...

A Still Life in Oil
I find the ‘still’ in sitting quietly taking time to become absorbed and observe intently. The ‘life’ is in the sensual treat of seasonal ripe fruit and native flora. Then to dip brushes into the buttery richness of oil paint and apply to canvas.
I do enjoy occasional forays into the precise world of miniatures and the joy of painting outdoors in gorgeous Dorset . My awards are from Australia where I lived for 36 years until recently being drawn back to UK.
