I am an enthusiastic amateur botanical artist. I have been painting in watercolour for about 12 years. I am motivated by the seemingly endless variations of colour, form, texture, movement, scent and sound you experience with plants. I enjoy trying to capture something of these qualities and represent them in my drawings and paintings.
I care about accuracy, control of my watercolours and about producing aesthetically satisfying paintings. I take inspiration from flowers, fruits and vegetables...
For the past year I have been experimenting with texture, collage and mixed media. Whilst I love the flow and movement of watercolour, my art tutor, Claire Thomas, has encouraged me to experiment more and to work in series, following each theme for six weeks or more.
For one series, based on the corroding cliffs at Ringstead Bay, I used watercolour and acrylic inks on gesso textured bases with grass, seaweed and found objects from the beach.
More recently, I have been painting a 'trio', star...

I retrained as a stone carver, letter cutter and architectural mason in 1999 and have been self-employed ever since, making headstones and memorials, lettering panels, relief carvings and small sculptures.
I love working on deep relief carvings, such as my 'St Michael', installed on the west front of Stinsford Church.
I also relish renovation work, such as the pinnacles on Strangways Hall in Abbotsbury, which are exact copies of original Victorian stonework.
A Still Life in Oil
I find the ‘still’ in sitting quietly taking time to become absorbed and observe intently. The ‘life’ is in the sensual treat of seasonal ripe fruit and native flora. Then to dip brushes into the buttery richness of oil paint and apply to canvas.
I do enjoy occasional forays into the precise world of miniatures and the joy of painting outdoors in gorgeous Dorset . My awards are from Australia where I lived for 36 years until recently being drawn back to UK.
